BARON PETER WRANGEL was one of the most important of the "White Generals" to fight the Red Army and one of the first officers to join the White Army against the Bolsheviks.

As a general he distinguished himself in 1919 when he successfully stormed the city of Tsaritsyn, defended by the most modern arms of the time, with a cavalry army that had marched across 300 miles of desert. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the volunteer army fighting the Bolsheviks. He was brilliant in his reorganization of a battered army and successful in holding the Red Army in check. Such is the story of General Wrangel one often finds in histories of the Russian Civil War.

However, the real Wrangel was a man of far greater dimension. This biography has been carefully compiled by his son Alexis Wrangel from never-before-published memoirs and personal papers. The figure of General Wrangel that emerges is a tribute to his distinguished family. Here we see Wrangel the husband, father, young officer of the Horse Guards, brilliant captain in the Russo-Japanese War, and finally, the famous commander of World War I and the Russian Civil War.

ALEXIS WRANGEL is the son of General Piotr Nikolayevich Wrangel, the Russian cavalry commander of the First World War. He is an authority on horsemanship and has written a standard text on the subject. He was educated in England and the United States and currently resides in Ireland.
