The VBL, light armoured vehicle, is a wheeled vehicle with amphibious capability that can carry out autonomous reconnaissance and infiltration missions and provide the environment for the Leclerc tank as a discovery and liaison vehicle.
The French army's VBL (Véhicule Blindé Léger) is gradually being replaced by the VBAE (Véhicule Blindé d'Aide à l'Engagement), as part of the Scorpion programme. This new vehicle is being developed in cooperation with Belgium. At the same time, the existing VBLs are being modernised, under the name VBL Ultima, to extend their service life.
