World War I was called the "war of the camera." While many earlier wars fought after photography's invention were documented by the medium, WWI represented a turning point. One of the most important changes was the way in which both the Allied forces and the Central Powers used photography as a tool: to spy, to provoke and to persuade. The official photographs made during the war were telling in terms of strategies, censorship and the constant need to whip up public support for the cause. In sharp contrast to the political and military uses, the importance of photography for personal use was undeniable. Studio portraits of soldiers and their families and sweethearts were widely popular; personal photo albums created permanent records of lives that were suddenly placed at risk. This volume and the exhibition it accompanies, bring together a diverse and remarkable selection of photographs drawn from international collections to illustrate the many important roles that photography played during the war.

La Première Guerre mondiale est souvent considérée comme une «guerre de la photographie». Si la photographie a servi à documenter d’autres guerres dans le passé, ce conflit marquera un tournant décisif pour ce moyen d’expression. Les photographies officielles reflètent la planification, la censure et un constant besoin de rallier l’opinion publique à la cause. Parallèlement, la Triple Entente et la Triple Alliance choisiront de faire de la photographie un instrument de stratégie, d’espionnage, de provocation et de persuasion.
L’importance de l’utilisation de l’appareil photographique pour un usage personnel contraste avec son utilisation politique et militariste. Les populaires portraits en studio des soldats et des membres de leur famille et les albums personnels composés avant, pendant et après la guerre qui témoignent de ces vies menacées montrent l’importance indéniable de la photographie dans l’espace privé. Cette exposition présente une sélection exceptionnelle de photographies issues de collections nationales et internationales afin d’illustrer les rôles clés que la photographie a été appelée à jouer durant la guerre.
