The SdKfz 250 first enterd service in 1940, a few being used in the Blitzkrieg on Western Europe. Following the German invasion of Russia in June 1941 SdKfz 250s were used in large numbers and in many roles. Appalling conditions in the winter of 1941-42 made it virtually impossible to use wheeled vehicles, thus requiring the deplyment of more half-tracks and the SdKfz 250 was to give invaluable service to the Wehmacht for the rest of the war. When the Afrika Korps landed in Tripoli in 1941 some of the first vehicles deployed were SdKfz 250s in the reconnaissance role.
