When the first T-34-85s (85mm guns) delivered by Zavod #112 appeared, they were assigned to the best units, the elite Red Guard battalions. However, as they were in formation in December 1943, it is not certain that they went into action before January or February 1944.
By then, about 400 had already been delivered to front-line units and became instantly popular with the crews. They gradually replaced the T-34/76 and by mid-1944 the T-34-85 outnumbered the older versions. They formed the bulk of the tank units on the eve of Operation Bagration, the Soviet response to the Allied landings in Normandy, and the Red Army's biggest offensive to date. It was the final push, aimed at Berlin. Prior to the production ramp-up, the 1943 model T-34-85s were generally assigned to selected crews, usually from Guard units.
