The term Scud refers to a family of short-range ballistic missiles developed from the 1950s by the Soviet Union. The term is derived from the NATO designation.
All Scuds are derived from the German V2, as were most missiles and rockets of the time. Because of their construction, they are very inaccurate. In this respect, Scuds can be considered wide-area weapons.
Like some other missiles, the military advantage of Scuds is their ease of transport, on vehicles equipped with missile booms, tractor-erectors and launchers. This mobility allows a wide range of firing positions and increases the survivability of such a weapon system.
