The M8 light armoured vehicle[7] is a 6×6 armoured vehicle produced by the Ford Motor Company during the Second World War. It was used from 1943 onwards by American and British forces in Europe and the Pacific until the end of the war. This vehicle was widely exported and, in 2024, was still in service in some countries.
In British service, the M8 was known as the ‘Greyhound’, a name rarely, if ever, used by the United States. The British Army found it to be insufficiently armoured, particularly in the hull floor, which could be easily penetrated by anti-tank mines (the solution found by the crews was to cover the floor of the crew compartment with sandbags). Nevertheless, it was produced in large numbers. The M8 Greyhound's excellent road mobility made it an excellent support vehicle for advancing American and British armoured columns. It performed poorly off-road, particularly in mud.
After the war, it was used by the Belgian Army (for the defence of airfields by the Air Force and in the Congo by the Force Publique).
