The tankers La Seine and La Saône were launched in 1939, but their construction was soon halted by the war. Finally commissioned at the end of the 1940s, they served for a time on the line to Iraq, before being taken over by the French Navy for its own use. They were converted into squadron supply tankers (PRE), a complete overhaul that required the installation of gantry cranes for the fuel hoses. This modification proved successful, and the two ships will now be integrated into the naval air groups, taking part in numerous exercises, including missions in the Pacific Ocean as part of Alpha Force. The main purpose of this operation was to protect the French nuclear test sites at Mururoa and Fangataufa, and it was to last for many years, with the career of the two tankers largely taking place during this period. Outclassed by units with far superior performance, La Seine and La Saône left the ranks of the French Navy in the mid-1970s and were condemned shortly afterwards.
