At the end of the 1940s, the French Navy was considering acquiring escort vessels more or less derived from the US-DE ‘Cannon’ class destroyers, fourteen of which were used by the French Navy. The preliminary design showed a unit equipped with a flush-deck hull like the US-DEs, but with certain elements inspired by the British “River”, of which six were also used by the French Navy. The initial 1948 project provided for an armament consisting of a 105 mm gun at the stern, two quadruple mounts of 40 mm guns quickly replaced by two double mounts of 57 mm Bofors guns in the open, four 20 mm Oerlikon guns, one or two wake grenades with a cut-out in the forward superstructure offering the possibility of later fitting triple mounts of torpedo tubes. In the end, the configuration adopted was three double ACAD model 1951 remote-controlled 57 mm/60 gun mounts under turrets, two 20 mm Oerlikons, four 550 mm triple torpedo tube mounts and a Bofors Mle 54 375 mm sextuple rocket launcher. In 1949, two units, the C 1 and C 2, were ordered, quickly followed by the C 3 and C4.
