The purchase contract for three hundred and thirty-four Leopard tanks was signed on Thursday 14 December 1967. The first example was handed over on 5 March 1968 to the Armoured Troops Demonstration Squadron and thirteen tanks took part in the 21 July parade. The Centre d'Instruction des Troupes Blindées of Bourg-Léopold was in charge of the reconversion of the M47 Patton crews on the new equipment. The first unit to receive the Leopards was the 4th Lancers of Soest which received its first three tanks on 30 November 1968. The three hundred and thirty-fourth and last unit was delivered in 1971.
