Following an agreement concluded in 1956 between Germany, Italy and France, a working group drew up the specifications for a standard European tank. Germany and France worked together on the same project and, after a series of tests, a prototype was to be delivered to each of the countries involved. However, in 1963, after tripartite trials, the agreement was cancelled and each country decided to build its own tank. Germany developed the Leopard 1 and France its AMX30. The first tanks rolled off the production line in Roanne (national industry) in 1966 and entered service the following year, gradually replacing the American M47. The AMX30 is made of moulded and refined steel. Its turret is moulded in one piece. It was equipped with a 720 hp Hispano-Suiza engine. The crew consisted of four men. The driver sat at the front left, while the other three crew members sat in the turret (the tank commander, the gunner and the loader).
