This French vehicle was designed by the Issy-Les-Moulineaux workshops (AMX) and mass-produced by FCM and Schneider-Creusot (now Creusot-Loire) from 1956.
From 1962, the Belgian army was gradually equipped with this equipment (built under licence in Belgium by C.F.C. de Familleureux) in five different versions totalling 555 vehicles:
(1) troop transport: 305 Ex
(2) command: 72 Ex
(3) 81mm mortar carrier: 90 Ex
(4) ANTAC missile launcher: 30 Ex
(5) cargo: 58 Ex
and a prototype.
Some AMX13s were fitted with a rear-mounted .30 machine gun or a front-mounted .50 machine gun. They were replaced in 1985 by M113 PCs and C25mm AIFV MILANs.
